Originally designed to sit above a doorway or interior opening, this impressive piece features deep hand carved decoration including fruit and vine festoons, scrolling foliage and a central oval cartouche framed by classical ornament.
The lower frieze is decorated with repeating geometric motifs while the crest above carries richly carved garlands of grapes and leaves, symbols traditionally associated with abundance and prosperity in Victorian civic architecture. The depth of carving and the layered timber construction show the work of highly skilled craftsmen typical of late 19th century public buildings.
Constructed from solid timber and retaining a beautiful aged patina, the piece has a wonderful sculptural quality and would make a striking overdoor feature, statement wall installation or decorative architectural salvage element. The reverse shows the substantial timber blocks used to build out the carving and allow the decoration to sit proud of the wall, a common method for large architectural elements of this period.
A rare opportunity to own a piece of Sydney’s architectural history. Condition: Good antique condition with age appropriate wear, marks and patina consistent with architectural salvage. Perfect as a dramatic over-door feature, above a fireplace, or as a statement decorative installation.
